Commercial SEO tools are priced for agencies, not for indie studios, and that pricing shapes which features they build.
Ahrefs' cheapest plan starts at 129 USD per month. Their "Advanced" tier, the first one that includes multi-project tracking you actually need, lands at 449 USD per month. Semrush sits in the same zone. Both price pages are public: Ahrefs pricing, Semrush pricing. We have paid both bills. We have also built our own replacement.
The problem with agency-priced tooling is not the dollar amount. The problem is that the whole feature surface is optimized for teams of ten who need shared dashboards, scheduled client reports, and a sales funnel that can justify the 449 USD line item against a 15,000 USD retainer. A one-person studio uses perhaps eight percent of that surface.
We built SEOMAX against DataForSEO exactly because DataForSEO prices per call. A rank check costs a fraction of a cent. A backlink snapshot costs a few cents. Total cost on our three internal projects runs around 45 USD per month, and the software itself is a Docker Compose bundle that sits on a 5 USD VPS. The difference is not 449 minus 45. The difference is that our 45 USD is usage-proportional, so it scales honestly with how hard we push the tool. The 449 USD was always a floor fee for capabilities we never opened.
The steelman for commercial tools is real: an agency of ten analysts needs SSO, needs a GUI that a junior can learn in a week, needs audit logs for when a client asks why their rank dropped, and needs vendor liability that an indie self-host cannot offer. Everything on the Ahrefs feature list is there for a reason. The reason is just not our reason.
The quiet second argument is that none of the commercial tools have good answers for Google AI Overviews yet. The SERP has changed. Rank position matters less. Impression share within AI summaries matters more. We are watching our own pipeline adapt week over week, and we are shipping the adaptations as they happen. The commercial tools cannot do that without an 18-month product cycle.
What we recommend to other small studios is not "build your own SEOMAX". What we recommend is: pay for DataForSEO directly, write 200 lines of Python against their API, and keep your own historical cache. That is one afternoon of work and it buys you 60 percent of what Ahrefs costs 449 USD per month for.
We released SEOMAX's deployment template as part of our own documentation because we think more indie studios will come to the same conclusion. The agency tier is real and necessary. The studio tier does not exist yet. We built it for ourselves. Other studios can do the same.
